Born 1953 · Cochrane, Ontario

Biography

I have worked in oil, watercolour, acrylic, gouache, and encaustic paints. I have also used photography, film, drawing, silkscreening and other printmaking techniques, welded metal, glass, stone carving and woodworking in my work. My current interest in layering encaustic wax came from glass sculptures I made years ago in the 80's where I painted watercolours on separate layers of glass which were stacked one on top the other creating a 3-D effect. In my recent work I have been working on portraits.

Artist Statement

In my recent work I paint to shine light on environmental conundrums, sometimes on human indifferences to other species, and our tenuous connection to water resources.

My interest in archeology, artifacts, and curios is reflected in some artworks. Certain artifacts from our past history can be difficult to decipher and leave us with an object that contains a sense of mystery, and that appeals to me. Sometimes I paint a landscape just so I can preserve the past, before it changes into unknown territory.

In the last 5 years I have been exploring the nature of encaustic in my paintings. I love the plasticity, the softness, and the visual depth that can be achieved through the use of encaustic. My painting style is representational and leans towards realism. I also consider the frame as an integral part as framing accentuates the artwork. My technique generally encompasses layering the wax to create a 3-dimensional space.
